Windows CE, a lightweight iteration of the 1995 Windows OS, was designed for PDAs, smartphones, and embedded systems. It was first introduced in 1996 and later rebranded as Windows Embedded Compact in 2008. Microsoft released the final version of this operating system, Windows Embedded Compact 2013 (CE 8.0), five years later.
Primary support came to an end in 2018, and now developers have announced the discontinuation of extended support. Windows CE is now considered a completely outdated product.
According to the authors of the news piece, just like with CE 7.0, there were very few devices running CE 8.0, so many people never even encountered this operating system.
