Recently, Microsoft released a major update for Windows 11, which, among numerous changes, included a built-in archiver. It’s now known that Windows can handle 11 file formats.
At present, the native archiver supports the following file types: .rar, .7z, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar.zst, .tar.xz, .tgz, .tbz2, .tzst, and .txz. However, at this point, Windows cannot extract password-protected archives, and there’s no word on when that might change. It’s reported that the new formats have been added through the open-source lib archive project, so in the near future, the list of supported archives may expand. For example, support for formats like LZH, LZH, and XAR may be introduced.
Update KB5031455 is not mandatory; you can download it through the “Windows Update Center.”
