In 2025, Microsoft plans to end support for the most popular operating system, Windows 10. Users have already begun signing a petition demanding a reversal of this decision.
The Canadian-American organization PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) has sent a document to Microsoft, urging the American tech giant to reconsider its impending abandonment of Windows 10. PIRG believes that otherwise, millions of computers that do not meet the system requirements of Windows 11 could end up in landfills.
The document also points out that such a decision will have a negative impact on the environment. Users who wish to upgrade to Windows 11 will need to purchase new hardware or update their existing systems. This will result not only in an increase in electronic waste but also in higher volumes of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere.
“This is not only bad for consumers but for the entire planet because outdated computers will contribute to our growing piles of toxic electronic waste,” said PIRG Director Lucas Rocket Gatterman.
